Mapper

Mapper is an application used for creating, measuring and manipulating routes on a map. If you have an internet connection, you can import map images directly from within Mapper. If you have a scanner, you can scan your maps straight into Mapper.

You can then draw on your route, define a scale (or use a predefined one) and it will work out the distance.

With Mapper you can now:
o Draw multiple routes
o Have routes spanning multiple maps
o Delete or move individual points on the route
o Add notes to points on the route o Check intermediate distances at any point on the route

Mapper came about because we wanted to measure the distances of my running routes, and couldn’t find anything which already did it for a reasonable price. Eventually we plan to develop Mapper into a fully-featured route recording and measuring system, aimed primarily at runners, cyclists and walkers.

The Basics

Here are the basics of how to use Mapper:

    a bitmap file, or paste from another application via the clipboard

    Select a predefined scale, or:

    Define a scale by selecting Scale, Set Scale Using Mouse, then point to either end of a known horizontal distance (e.g. left then right sides of a 500metre square) – vertical distances are ignored here. Then type in the distance and units.

    Now draw your route – either hold down the mouse button and draw freehand, or click individual points which will be joined by straight lines.

    By showing individual points (View, Show Points) you can click and drag points, and hover over points to find intermediate distances.

    You can save either as a bitmap or as a Mapper file, which includes both the map and the route.
